Description: a hard calcareous substance consisting of the continuous skeleton secreted by many tribes of marine cœlenterate polyps for their support and habitation. Historically, and in earlier literature and folklore, the name refers to the red coral, an arborescent species found in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean (OED).
