De tijd is voorbijgevlogen sinds de eerste dag van mijn master! Het is bijna niet te bevatten hoe snel de afgelopen maanden zijn gegaan.
Daar is natuurlijk een goede reden voor: ik heb het ontzettend druk gehad. Mijn eerste blok begon ik met twee vakken: Collecting, Curating and Display 1 en Art and Thought in the Dutch Republic.
(Dat was sowieso al anders dan ik gewend was in Edinburgh, waar het semester niet in twee delen is opgedeeld. Het was dus meteen aanpoten! Maar eerlijk is eerlijk, dit is precies wat ik wilde. In Edinburgh miste ik soms wat academische uitdaging, en nu mag ik me volledig uitleven!)
De eerste twee vakken gingen goed. Ik vond het vak over de Nederlandse Republiek fantastisch, vooral omdat het gegeven werd door Hanneke Grootenboer. Ik bewonder haar academische werk al jaren, dus het was geweldig om nu les van haar te krijgen. Voor dit vak bezochten we het Allard Pierson Museum, waar we oude kaarten mochten bekijken. Dat was een bijzondere ervaring.
Ook gingen we naar Leiden, naar de expositie Susanna and me too. Er hing een Gentileschi! Meer hoef ik denk ik niet te vertellen…
Voor de eindopdracht schreef ik een essay over kantklossen, een onderwerp waar ik eerder een blogpost over schreef. Gelukkig was Hanneke positief over mijn essay: ik kreeg een 7!
Het andere vak, Collecting, Curating and Display 1, vond ik minder interessant, en dat werd in het tweede blok alleen maar duidelijker…
In blok twee volgde ik Collecting, Curating and Display 2 en Looking at Art in the Dutch Republic. Over Collecting kan ik kort zijn: het was saai. Voor de opdracht moest ik een permanente collectie analyseren, en ik koos voor het Dordrechts Museum vanwege hun interessante presentatietechnieken.
Dit bracht me in contact met Evelyne Merkx, die in 2010 het interieur van het museum ontwierp. Ik had een leuk interview met haar, wat mijn essay hopelijk meer diepgang gaf (al wacht ik nog op mijn cijfer!).
Een leuke bijkomstigheid: via dit interview kreeg ik een baan aangeboden als archivaris bij Evelyne’s architectenbureau Merkx. Ik werk daar nu ongeveer een maand en heb het erg naar mijn zin. Mijn taak is om haar werk te ordenen, zodat er een boek over kan worden geschreven.
Het vak Looking at Art in the Dutch Republic was daarentegen erg leuk, al wat chaotischer dan verwacht. De opdrachten waren minder academisch, wat fijn was omdat ik worstelde met mijn essay over het Dordrechts Museum. We moesten bijvoorbeeld een acquisition proposal schrijven en een fictieve dialoog tussen 17e-eeuwse figuren. Voor dit vak bezochten we het prentenkabinet van het Rijksmuseum, een antiekwinkel aan de Spiegelgracht, en het Frans Hals Museum. Vooral het bezoek aan de antiekwinkel vond ik geweldig, met zoveel bijzondere objecten. De expositie over Maarten van Heemskerck in het Frans Hals Museum vond ik minder indrukwekkend; zijn werk is mij iets te grof en plat, al begrijp ik dat anderen dat juist mooi vinden.
Tussen de bedrijven door bezocht ik ook PAN Amsterdam. Wat een fantastische ervaring! Ik heb genoten van alle sieraden van Cartier, Van Cleef en Tiffany, en van het prachtige glaswerk, klokken en andere kunstobjecten. Ik kijk nu al uit naar volgend jaar!
Daarnaast organiseer ik momenteel verschillende tutorials, zoals over funeraire cultuur in Nederland en Wendela Bicker. Deze tutorials mogen we zelf opzetten met een professor, waardoor je echt kunt focussen op wat je interessant vindt. Dit proces is wel wat chaotisch en onoverzichtelijk, wat me soms nerveus maakt, maar ik vertrouw erop dat het goedkomt in het volgende semester.
Ook volg ik een kort onderzoeksvak van 10 EC over textiel via een onderzoeksschool. Textiel fascineert me enorm, vooral nu ik me minder bezighoud met modernere kunstenaars. Voor dit vak bezochten we de tentoonstelling Unravel in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Hoewel ik de opzet van de expositie wat rommelig vond, is het altijd goed om textielkunst in een museumcontext te zien.
Tot slot ben ik ook aangenomen bij de Programma Commissie van Heritage Studies. Dit is een adviesorgaan dat helpt de kwaliteit van de opleiding te bewaken. Ik kijk ernaar uit om hiermee aan de slag te gaan!

Ik heb nog niet alle cijfers binnen, dus ik weet nog niet precies hoe ik het heb gedaan dit semester. Maar ik ben hoopvol gestemd en kijk uit naar wat het volgende semester zal brengen!

Time has flown by since the first day of my master’s! It’s hard to believe how quickly these past months have gone.
Of course, there’s a good reason for that: I’ve been incredibly busy. My first block started with two courses: Collecting, Curating and Display 1 and Art and Thought in the Dutch Republic.
(This was already different from what I was used to in Edinburgh, where the semester wasn’t divided into two parts. So it was quite an adjustment! But to be honest, this is exactly what I wanted. I often felt there wasn’t enough academic rigor in Edinburgh, and now I finally get to push myself!)
The first two courses went well. Naturally, I especially loved the course on the Dutch Republic, particularly because it was taught by Hanneke Grootenboer. I’ve admired her academic work for years, so it was amazing to have her as a lecturer. For this course, we visited the Allard Pierson Museum, where we got to examine old maps. That was a special experience. For the final assignment, I wrote an essay on bobbin lace, a topic I’ve written about on my blog before. Luckily, Hanneke was positive about my essay: I received a 7!
The other course, Collecting, Curating and Display 1, was less interesting, and this became even more apparent in the second block…
In block two, I took Collecting, Curating and Display 2 and Looking at Art in the Dutch Republic. I’ll keep it brief about Collecting: it was boring. For the assignment, I had to analyze a permanent collection, and I chose the Dordrechts Museum because I find their display techniques fascinating. This led me to connect with Evelyne Merkx, who designed the museum’s interior in 2010. I had a great interview with her, which hopefully added depth to my essay (although I’m still waiting for my grade!).
A fun side note: this interview also landed me a job as an archivist at Evelyne’s architecture firm, Merkx. I’ve been working there for about a month now, and I’m really enjoying it. My role is to organize her work so that a book can eventually be published about it.
The course Looking at Art in the Dutch Republic, on the other hand, was great, although more chaotic than expected. The assignments were less academic, which was a relief since I was struggling with my essay on the Dordrechts Museum. For example, we had to write an acquisition proposal and create a fictional dialogue between 17th-century figures. For this course, we visited the print room of the Rijksmuseum, an antique shop on the Spiegelgracht, and the Frans Hals Museum. I particularly enjoyed the visit to the antique shop, where we saw many fascinating objects. The exhibition on Maarten van Heemskerck at the Frans Hals Museum was less impressive to me. His work feels a bit too rough and flat for my taste, although I understand why others appreciate it.
In between, I also visited PAN Amsterdam, which was an incredible experience! I was amazed by all the Cartier, Van Cleef, and Tiffany jewelry, as well as the stunning glassware, clocks, and other art objects. I can’t wait to go back next year!
I’m also organizing various tutorials, such as on funerary culture in the Netherlands and Wendela Bicker. These tutorials are self-organized with a professor, which allows you to focus on what interests you most. It is a bit chaotic and unstructured, which makes me nervous, but I trust it will come together next semester.
Additionally, I’m taking a short research course (worth 10 ECTS) on textiles through a research school. I’ve always found textiles fascinating, especially now that I’m less focused on more modern artists. For this course, we visited the Unravel exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. While I found the exhibition’s layout a bit disorganized, it’s always great to see textile art in a museum context.
Finally, I’ve been accepted into the Program Committee for Heritage Studies. This committee helps maintain the quality of the program by providing feedback and advice. I’m excited to get started with this!
